Fields of Interest

Dov Shmotkin conducts research that concerns the development of an integrated theory on the pursuit of happiness in the face of adversity. This work expands his studies on well-being across the life span as well as on the long-term traumatic effects among Holocaust survivors. His studies in this area examine the interrelations of biographical experiences (e.g., trauma), mainly as contoured by the individual's time perspective, with self-conception systems (e.g., subjective well-being, meaning in life, the hostile-world scenario). He is engaged in gerontological research on developmental and aging processes along adulthood and late life, focusing on the relations of such processes with current indicators of physical and mental health. His studies are based on data of large national surveys as well as of particular sub-populations. Part of his gerontological research deals with diverse predictors of mortality.
