A myelophthisic process may also be caused by infections involving the marrow, including disseminated fungal, mycobacterial, and parasitic infections. Seen here are multiple amastigotes of Leishmania donovani in a bone marrow smear. The infiltrative process does not have to fill up much of the marrow to produce the peripheral blood leukoerythroblastic pattern.
