This abdominal CT scan demonstrates atrophy of the right kidney while the left kidney has undergone mild compensatory hypertrophy. There was right renal arterial occlusion from severe atherosclerosis. (The renal veins are highlighted here by contrast). The result was increased renin secretion from right kidney, and the patient became hypertensive. Continued hypertension will eventually damage the other kidney. The extent of atherosclerosis is marked by prominent aortic mural thrombus.
