Well, maybe not really.


Statistics (that I don't have available at the moment, and don't really intend to search for) tell us that on the one hand leisure time has continually been on the rise in post-industrial society. What's more, the economy has become oriented less toward industrial production and more toward consumer goods and recreation. Quite simply put, recreation has become very big business. But has our free time actually increased? In today's hi-tech economy people earn respectable salaries (or at least they used to) but they work very long hours and often take their work home with them so that even if they have the money for recreational activities they no longer have the time. I'm sure that I've referred to this in previous columns, but none of my searches brought up what I thought I was looking for, so we'll leave it at that.
