My own take on that subject.

I've never visited the Statue of Liberty. I'd like to, but to tell the truth it's not a truly high priority item on my list, and I doubt that even the highest will ever be seen other than via a television screen. Still, as is, no doubt, true for just about everyone, I have my own web of associations that are attached to it. One of these is the poem engraved on the pedestal of the statue, "The New Colossus" by the American Jewish poet Emma Lazarus. When I didn't find any mention of the poem on the web site of the Statue of Liberty National Monument, I was quite surprised, and sent off a letter to an e-mail address on that web site. At the time I hardly gave thought to the fact that I was embarking on a sterling example of something that I always try to teach about the internet.
