Why leave your computer screen?
Ordinarily not all of the images of a physical exhibit are available online, and
seeing the actual artwork (rather than the "images" of them) "with
our own eyes" - if that's the word for seeing a work of art "in person"
- can create a different feeling than viewing them online. But "visiting"
a museum online has, for numerous reasons, become a popular, and even logical,
activity. Not too long ago it was among the more popular online activities. And
for good reason. Today's digital reproductions are often of high enough quality
such that from our computer screens we get an excellent view - without somebody
standing in front of us, or nudging us on - of the work under consideration. This
raises other issues, but they may be the topic of a future column.
