In a new light.
Admittedly, many of the Google Map mashes don't seem particularly impressive.
They're nice to view, but our understanding of what we're looking at doesn't seem
to be enhanced, or changed, by the information getting to us via the map. It may
be fun to view available apartments by location on a map, but for
most of us, a particular address that we find in a newspaper classified gives
us a mental picture of the neighborhood, and the map itself doesn't contribute
much else (other than concentrating the available apartments geographically). The
census bureau information is a different story. When we can receive rather extensive
statistics on a particular area on a map, we gain a better understanding. And
the Chicago crime maps are absolutely fascinating. Essentially they offer us a
highly accessible database right at our fingertips, and anybody who chooses to
study the topic of Chicago crime can probably garner a very rich variety of information
by choosing different parameters to view.
