Philosophical discourse is often the object of interlingual exercises, for while the concept per se is universal, writers, of necessity, use particular languages to express themselves. Contemporary thought, however, particularly that informed by psychoanalytical theory, hermeneutics, deconstruction and semiology, recognizes that translation's function in the philosophical process is not merely one of linguistic elucidation; indeed it is considered central to philosophical reflexion itself. Papers may explore the question through the study of specific instances (a particular author or work) or from a general theoretical perspective.

This study explores the little examined links between the fiction of Joseph Conrad and André Gide. It encompasses a range of texts belonging to the early modernist period in English and French Literature, focussing upon two of its most important representatives. Using theories drawn from psychoanalysis, translation studies and intertextuality, the book traces the process by which Gide developed his own writing and fictional ethics against the example set by a foreign writer, Conrad. The antagonistic relationship of the disciple with his mentor is examined in a series of comparative readings of novels by the two writers. The possibility of paraphrase within a language is a source of expressive flexibility and also provides for vital latitude in the translation process. Part I of the book looks at kinds of dissimilarity between expressions and ways in which this can be overcome. The modification of the underlying "Smysl-Tekst" model (Mel'chuk) concentrates above all on deep syntactic structure and the so-called lexical functions. A broad system of paraphrase is then developed for German and applied to Russian-German translation, establishing a catalogue of motives for obligatory paraphrastic translation in the process. The concluding Section is given over to a part-formalized analysis of German translations of a passage from Anna Karenina. The main objective of the study is to provide a foundation for multi-language explanatory-combinatorial dictionaries and for translation phrase-books. (Niemeyer)

This book examines the possibilities of a science of translation and aims at the establishment of a unified methodology. The first chapter discusses textual analysis as part of translation along with critical opinions, the history of translation and problems of translatability. Special attention is devoted to the concept of `total translation' in connection with language and text on the one hand, and literary trends such as Russian symbolism on the other. The second chapter attempt s to construct a universal model of translation, with the help of which it is then argued that various types of intertextual relations can be accounted for. Various types of translation are then classified and the concept of `translation method' is formulated. In the following chapter translation as a `metatext' is analysed in the context of other types of metatext which together form a literature. Finally, some problems of intersemiotic translation are also discussed within the framework of th e same universal model of translation. (PT)

Language transfers in audio-visual communication are produced daily in television broadcasting, cinema, radio, video, etc. And yet little is known about the working conditions. Die Zeitschrift TEXTconTEXT, die Ende 1995 eingestellt werden mußte, soll 1997 wieder erscheinen. Dazu gibt es einen neuen Verlag, der als Programm denselben Namen wie die Zeitschrift trägt. die Zeitschrift TEXTconTEXT soll wieder ein Publikationsorgan für Theorie, Praxis und Didaktik des Dolmetschens und Übersetzens werden. An erster Stelle steht dabei ein den kulturellen Faktor betonender holistischer funktionaler Ansatz. Mehr als in den früheren Jahrg&auml;ngen möchten wir neueren Tendenzen Raum geben und die Zeitschrift dadurch auch internationaler werden lassen, als bisher der Fall war. Natürlich wollen die Herausgeber, Margret Amman und Hans J. Vermeer, bewährte Auffassungen keineswegs zurückstellen. Sie hoffen vielmehr, durch Diskussionen Verbindungen herstellen zu können.

CHINESE TRANSLATION STUDIES

The first issue of the 1996 volume of Perspectives: Studies in Translatology published at the University of Copenhagen was devoted to Chinese Translation Studies. The issue, guest-edited by Wang Ning and Xu Yanhong of Beijing, brings together ten articles written in PR China, Hong Kong and the US.

A NEW TRANSLATION SERIES

In February 1997, St Jerome Publishing House will launch a new series of books under the title of "Translation Theories Explained". The series, edited by Prof. Anthony Pym, is designed to make ideas on translation accessible to readers otherwise thwarted by arcane terminology, hard-to-find books and a paradoxical lack of translations in this field. The emphasis is on explaining the essential points as clearly and as concisely as possible. Recognizing the plurality of approaches to translation, the series places each theory in its historical context, gives examples illustrating the main ideas, opens perspectives for future work and summarizes the most significant points of criticism.

SOUTHERN AFRICAN BIBLIOGRAPHY AVAILABLE

The Bibliography comprises two sections: the first contains details of more than 700 articles relating to translation, interpreting, terminology and lexicography and the second lists dictionaries and grammar books in European and African languages most used by translators and students. A third section which will be added at a later stage lists literary works in the South African languages that have been translated into other languages.

The Bibliography is being produced as a ring-bound printout and on stiffy (the Bibliography has been compiled in WordPerfect 6, but can be converted and provided in a variety of formats). The cost is R50 for either of these and R75 for both. The Bibliography is updated constantly and updates will be issued annually, which will be available at a reduced price to those who have purchased an initial copy. Proceeds go to SATI's Developmental Fund.

THE NEW LANGUAGE INTERNATIONAL

Language International, published by John Benjamins (Amsterdam), has been a respected source for language professionals throughout the world for over eight years. As of 1997, Language International will be edited by Robert C. Sprung and Andrew Joscelyne. Under the new editorship, the magazine will focus more sharply on the practical information one needs to survive in the fast-paced international language industry.

STUDY PROGRAM FOR BIBLE TRANSLATORS

The Hebrew University's School for Overseas Students has planned a 4-month course for English-Speaking Bible translators for Spring 1997. This course is unique in that it is planned with the needs of Bible translators in mind, and will be conducted only for them. Those completing the course will be granted a Certificate in Bible Translation. The pre-requisites are: two years of any type of higher education and a successful completion in "Introduction to Biblical Hebrew" (or equivalent level of knowledge). A similar program for French-Speaking Bible translators is offered in the Fall of 1997.

NEW ACTIVITIES IN SAARBRÜCKEN

Mit der Einrichtung des Advanced Translation Studies Center (ATSC) hat die Fachrichtung 8.6 "Angewandte Sprachwissenschaft sowie Übersetzen und Dolmetschen" der Universität des Saarlandes (Saarbrücken) den Grundstein für den Ausbau eines Dialogs zwischen Theorie und Praxis gelegt. Zusammen mit international führenden Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaftlerinnen und Vertreterinnen aus der Berufspraxis bot die Fachrichtung mit Unterstützung des Studienzentrums der Universität des Saarlandes erstmals Kompaktkurse in englischer Sprache zu den Schwerpunkten Fachübersetzen, Kulturspezifika und Übersetzen, mehrsprachige Terminologiearbeit, Maschinelle Übersetzung und zum Dolmetschen an. Das ATSC hat auch eine Schwester im Bereich der Forschung: das Advanced Translation Research Center (ATRC) besteht aus Forschungsgruppen zur Methodologie im Bereich Übersetzen/Dolmetschen, zum Problem der Kulturspezifik beim Übersetzen und Dolmetschen und zum Bereich Übersetzen fachlicher Texte, die neueste Erkenntnisse in den verschiedenen Bereichen der Übersetzungs- und Dolmetschwissenschaft gewinnen, sammeln und aufbereiten.
