This large nodular mass is a keloid excised from the ear in a young man who had previously incurred trauma with a laceration of the skin of the ear. Ear piercing in women may promote keloid formation. A keloid is an exaggerated healing response with an overgrowth of dermal scar tissue that forms over months following the injury.
