The second finger here has become infected around the nail, called paronychia. The infection has spread up along the finger to produce swelling and eythema, called cellulitis. These are usually bacterial infections. Streptococci are often the cause for cellulitis, because they elaborate streptokinases that allow spreading of the bacteria through soft tissues.
