If there is generalized fluid collection in soft tissues, then one can demonstrate "pitting edema" as shown here in the center where an impression is left by your examining finger with pressure over the area of edema. Pitting edema can be judged as 1+ to 4+ depending upon the amount of fluid. Such edema is seen in dependent body areas such as the lower legs in persons with poor cardiac function.
