This atypical melanocytic hyperplasia is histologically "in between" a clearly benign nevus and a malignant melanoma. There is an increase in melanocytes, some with atypical features, at the dermal-epidermal junction. An inherited condition in which such lesions occur is the dysplastic nevus syndrome.
