The chest radiograph above demonstrates increased interstitial markings in all lung fields as a consequence of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (usual interstitial pneumonitis, or UIP). There is continued loss of lung volume so that the forced vital capacity (FVC) is reduced, and the forced expiratory volume at 1 second (FEV1) is reduced as well, so the FVC/FEV1 ratio generally remains unchanged since the reductions are typically proportional with restrictive lung diseases such as UIP.
