Stress to the fetus in utero, whatever the cause, leads to reflex actions of the fetus such as loss of anal sphincter tone with passage of meconium into the amniotic cavity. The greenish-black meconium stains the fetal membranes and the fetal surface of the placenta, as seen here, as well as the fetal skin.
