Eruptive xanthomas are seen over the elbow at the left and the buttocks at the right. These yellow papules may wax and wane with elevations and decreases in blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with hyperlipidemia. The lesions get their color from the numerous lipid-laden macrophages that are present in them. [Image courtesy of Ilan Hammel MD, Tel Aviv University] |
