With the trichrome stain, the abnormal mitochondria appear as reddish granular deposits. Mitochondrial myopathy may present clinically in several ways: proximal muscular weakness, ophthalmoplegia, and cardiomyopathy. Most patients are young adults, but the disease can present in infancy.
