Seen at the left is the normal pink thymus of a term infant, compared to the somewhat smaller adult thymus on the right. In infancy and childhood, the thymus is an important part of immune system, a place to which marrow stem cells migrate and give rise to T-lymphocytes. In adults, the thymus is mostly replaced by adipose tissue.
