The epiglottis at the right and the larynx below demonstrate marked enlargment from edema. This may occur with infection, but can also be a result of a systemic anaphylactic (type 1 hypersensitivity) immune reaction, as with allergy to penicillin, and can occur within minutes of exposure to the antigen, resulting in life-threatening airway obstruction.
