This is mucormycosis involving a paranasal sinus. Mucor circinelloides is a fungus that produces broad, short, non-septate hyphae that stain better with H&E than with special stains such as PAS and GMS. Ketoacidosis with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus produces an environment which favors the growth of this fungus. Mucormycosis is invasive and difficult to treat.
