The larynx has been opened here to reveal aspiration of gastric material, which appears as the large variegated bolus filling the airway. Aspiration may occur accidentally while eating. Young children may aspirate objects they place in their mouths. However, aspiration is often the terminal event in persons with underlying neurologic disease.
