This is typhlitis, inflammation of the cecum, with perforation seen at the left asterisk. The serosal surface demonstrates a green-brown exudate with peritonitis from rupture and release of feculant material. Typhlitis is uncommon, but can occur in immunocompromised patients, including those with neutropenia and leukemia. The term neutropenic enterocolitis is used when there is more extensive bowel involvement. |
