This is the microscopic appearance of a hernia sac from an outpouching of peritoneum through a defect in the inguinal region. A thin mesothelium covers the connective tissue of the sac. A loop of small bowel may become caught in the hernia sac, leading to bowel obstruction and possibly infarction.
