This is an example of cecal volvulus with a reddish-black portion of infarcted cecum having been resected. Volvulus is a twisting of the bowel so that the blood supply becomes obstructed, as well as the bowel itself. The lack of blood supply leads to ischemia with infarction. Obstruction of venous outflow can produce marked congestion. If caught early enough, the bowel can be untwisted to restore blood supply, but this is often not the case. |
