This is menstrual phase endometrium with breakdown of the glands and stroma, along with hemorrhage and leukocyte infiltration. The upper two-thirds of the endometrium is shed. From lower third, the basalis layer, which does not respond to the ovarian hormones, will arise a new endometrial lining in the next cycle.
