On cross-section of the eyeball can be seen a lens at the right which contains a cataract. Cataracts are more common in the elderly and in persons with diabetes mellitus. Such cataracts can be removed and replaced by a lens implant. [Image contributed by Nick Mamalis, MD, University of Utah]
