This diagram depicts a supravalvular aortic stenosis. Complete aortic atresia is incompatible with life, but aortic stenosis may range from mild to severe. Aortic stenosis can be classified as follows:
Supravalvular: narrowing above the aortic valve; can be an hourglass shape (as shown above) or hypoplasia
Valvular: most common form is bicuspid aortic valve; a unicuspid aortic valve is fatal; senile calcific aortic stenosis involves normal tricuspid valves later in life
Subvalvular: includes obstruction by a fibrous band or by asymmetric muscular hypertrophy (as in idiopathic hypertrophic subaortic stenosis, a form of cardiomyopathy
