An uncommon but distinctive form of viral infection of the brain is herpes simplex virus encephalitis. The cases are sporadic and can occur in non-immunocompromised persons. HSV infection often produces hemorrhages in the temporal lobe. Like other viral infections, HSV can produce mononuclear cell infiltrates microscopically. [Image contributed by Jeannette J.
