The objective of the course is to expand and elaborate the view of syntactic theory presented in "Advanced Syntax" by introducing a selected set of novel types of phenomena, and some related major theoretical proposals. Among the topics to be discussed will be: syntactic phenomena occurring selectively in main clauses but not in embedded clauses; the occurrence, typology and distribution of phonologically null elements in clausal subject position, including the licensing of PRO, control and the role of Tense; head movements (vs. phrasal movements); so-called "parasitic gap" constructions (traces apparently not created by movement) and A-bar chains; VP ellipsis and anaphora.

The course requires regular attendance and active participation. The grade will be based on a Take-home exam.
