| This seminar will explore the way in which popular culture interweaves with poetry from the period of the nineteenth century until the present. Various media and poetry will be used. One example: the thematic and formal use of popular music, from dance hall, and children’s songs, to rock, blues and jazz will be traced in poetry by Swinburne, Yeats, Eliot, William Carlos Williams, Jack Kerouac, Langston Hughes, Allen Ginsberg and others. The use in music of poetic references as well as poetic elements will also be considered. Other areas of popular culture include dance, comics, television, Internet, and film.
SEMINAR REQUIREMENTS Students are required to prepare an organized presentation for class on a date and subject to be determined between the instructor and the student within three weeks of the beginning of the semester. This aspect of the seminar is essential in order to organize appropriate materials and bibliography. Students who cannot fulfill this requirement should not register for this seminar Two one-page bibliographical reports Six one page papers concerning the reading for the class One examination written in class. One ten-page paper due one month after then end of the semester. Active class participation.. | |
