0627.3142  Seminar in Syntax סוגיות בתחביר
Prof. Alexander Grosu פרופ' אלכסנדר גרוסוסמינר
The seminar will address a number of issues in syntactic theory, with the twin goals (i) improving the studentsknowledge of current syntactic theory, and (ii) of familiarizing them with the methods and argumentation used by theoretically-oriented linguists with a view to helping them take a first step towards doing such work themselves. Whenever possible, the consequences of syntactic proposals for the syntax-semantics interface will be examined.
Among the issues we will address are (i) phrase-structure and X-bar theory, (ii) varieties of movement to A-positions, (iii) predication, (iv) the binding theory, and possibly others (depending on time availability). The issues will be discussed in class on the basis of previously assigned readings.
Students duties: (i) read the assigned materials regularly, carefully and in time, (ii) select a topic in syntactic theory or the syntax-semantics interface between the sixth and eighth week of the course, submit it in writing to the instructor, and secure his approval, (iii) write a seminar paper on that topic under the guidance of the instructor, and submit it in final form no later than three months after the end of the course (rough length: between 15 and 25 pages).
Language of instruction: English. However, students may ask questions and write their seminar papers in either English or Hebrew. Papers must be typed, with double-spacing and wide margins on both sides of the page.
