| The course will survey the breakup of Common Slavic into 14 daughter languages. Special attention will be given to (a) the role of language contact in the creation of independent Slavic languages and (b) to the phenomenon of relexification. In the latter context, the genesis of Modern Hebrew, a Slavic language, will be discussed in detail. No prior knowledge of a Slavic language (other than Modern Hebrew) is required.
