The Department of Hebrew Literature of the Tel Aviv University takes active part in the Israeli literary life, acknowledging the importance of Hebrew literature throughout  generations of Jewish and Israeli culture.

The different fields of research and teaching in the department represent a wide range of scientific and critical approaches, while dealing with the different genres:  poetry, prose and drama. The study of such literary fields as folklore, children's literature, holocaust literature, mysticism and others, is anchored in historical, cultural and ideological references.

Beside modern literature written in the last 100 years and being written nowadays, the department deals with a wide variety of eras, such as Midrashic literature, ancient poetry, Middle Ages, Kabala, Haskala and Hasidut literature.

Among the courses of study taught and researched in the department are gender and women literature, the links between Hebrew and world literature and the relationship between literature and art.

As of the coming year, the Hebrew Literature department shall become a part of the extended Literature department. For contact details, see the General Literature Deprtment. For further information regarding the new extended Literature department, see the new Literature website.
