Hubble Space Telescope

The Hubble space telescope is the first telescope to be placed beyond the earth's atmosphere. The telescope is located in a special satellite made only for this propose, which moves in a low-earth orbit.

Being out in space the telescope is no really closer to the observed stars. So, why to send a telescope to the space, it was more simple to handle a telescope on earth? The earth's atmosphere is the answer to this question. The air of the atmosphere absorbs some of the stars' light which reaches the earth. The only way to avoid this problem is to go out of the atmosphere. Using the satellite, the astronomers on the earth have "eyes" in space. The telescope has a parabolic reflector of a diameter of 2.4 m. It observers the spectrum of the visible light, near ultraviolet, and near infrared. It is in control from the ground by communication satellites. A central control room at earth receives the picture that seen by the telescope. Hubble was sent to space in April 1994. Despite some problems that arose in its activity, some of the pictures it transmitted to earth are more detailed than these which were observed by terrestrial telescopes.
