Because I needed the whole month.
The Boidem column of two years ago was also dated September 30, and although I
ultimately succeeded in finding what to my mind is a worthy
date tie-in, I well remember the difficulty I had finding a fitting event.
This month as well, I encountered more than my usual amount of difficulty as I
checked various dates in an attempt to find an event that might merit mention
here. After spending more time on this activity than can readily be justified
(going under the probably correct assumption that these columns have a very limited
number of readers, I can further assume that these date tie-ins that cling precariously
to the main column on the strength of no more than a tiny asterisk command even
fewer readers) I decided that this time I could link the date to something much
more mundane. For that reason I decided simply to tell the truth. This column
was being posted on the last day of the month because I only finished preparing
it on the last day of the month. In many ways it was a frantic and busy month,
filled not only with numerous work-related tasks but also with holidays and family-related
matters, and I needed all the time I could get.
And then, how else but serendipitously (though I won't expand on that theme this
time), I discovered what seems to be a date of true universal, and Boidem-like
significance which for some inexplicable reason seems to have slipped by me for
numerous years. Call it luck, but I'm more than happy to acknowledge the date
of the publication of Gutenberg's first printed book.
