It is possible, you know.
I know a few people who have told me that when they take naps in the afternoon
they take the phone (the regular one, the one that used to have a dial on it)
off the hook. I'm not really sure that I believe them.
It does, however, show up as somewhat common advice on the internet. A Google
search on the phrase "take the phone off the hook" brings up about 4300
pages. Some of these contain the phrase in lyrics to various songs (none of them,
as best I can recall, known to me) but many, probably most, contain it as advice
for relaxing and/or getting into a mood (not always romantic). Frankly, I greatly
doubt that anyone really does this. There are probably many more people suggesting
we do this than really doing it.
And of course I greatly doubt that anybody, anywhere, still has a phone on which
the receiver actually hangs on a hook from which it might, by choice, be taken
off.
