A social lightning rod.
Lois Weisberg seems to be one of these people. An article about her from The New Yorker shows her to be the sort of person who makes things happen simply by being able to connect between people. The author suggests that perhaps meeting her and connecting to her web of friends isn't a question of luck, but instead simply one of time:
It could be argued, of course, that even if Cindy hadn't met Lois
on the street twenty-three years ago she would have met her
somewhere else, maybe a year later or two years later or ten years
later, or, at least, she would have met someone who knew Lois or
would have met someone who knew someone who knew Lois, since
Lois Weisberg is connected, by a very short chain, to nearly
everyone.
Would it be going too far to suggest, as the tagline to the article asks, "Does she rule the world?". If the answer is yes, perhaps that's not such a bad thing, since it suggests that power isn't in the hands of the pentagon, or the multi-nationals, but in rather innocuous people whom me might meet on the street whose power resides in their ability to widen the web.
