It was on This
Day in History in 1907 that James
E. Casey established the company that was to become the United
Parcel Service. A delivery boy himself, Casey identified a need for
an efficient means of transporting packages from place to place, and established
a small company to meet that need. That need expanded, and the company
along with it. Today, when we are able to transport data and information
(what's the difference?) with such incredible speed and ease, the transportation
of atoms from place to place is often seen as an outdated, anachronistic,
endeavor. But it's still a complex and complicated task, and, in some sort
of full circle fashion, the UPS has integrated internet use into the tracking
of packages, putting bits to use in the service of atoms.
