Signed, sealed and
delivered.
There was no need to search through any of the traditional sources I
use for finding significant dates in order to establish this month's date
tie-in. The date for uploading this column was both fitting and obvious: this
was the date on which I submitted three printed copies of my thesis, as required,
to my advisor.
The world of the internet is often referred to as a virtual world, suggesting,
somehow, that it is governed by different laws than those of the tangible,
three-dimensional world we usually occupy. It is often seen as a world set
apart, a parallel world that functions by a different schedule. Submitting
my thesis and uploading this column about that thesis on the same day is,
perhaps, a means of meshing those worlds, of establishing, even if only for
a brief moment, a correspondence between those two separate worlds. It gives
me great pleasure to be able to have contributed, in my own small way, to
that correspondence.
