A word on preparing papers
As adults some of us actually use libraries in order to
find information that interests us. But it's hard to figure out how it
is we acquired this habit. After all, we certainly didn't learn it in school.
As pupils we learn that libraries are where we go in order to get information
that we're supposed to use in papers that we're supposed to prepare - papers
that have been assigned by the teacher, and that only the teacher is going
to read. My guess is that this "skill" is being translated to
the internet very accurately: pupils are given assignments that don't interest
anyone, and they're told to find relevant resources. So instead of being
in a vast library filled with fascinating materials that get overlooked
in order to find the relevant information, we teach pupils to "search"
the internet for the same relevant information, training them to keep their
eyes on the road and not to take in the view. And though we should, we
certainly don't equip them anything similar to Horatio's
prayer from Paul Goodman's great but forgotten novel The Empire
City.
