One of those obvious links.
At least in the Boidem a phrase like that demands, or at the very least suggests, a link. Interestingly, the column that uses the phrase as its title doesn't link to Gilbert and Sullivan. On the other hand, that column really does have at least a partial list - of topics that the columns until then had examined. What seems to be my only linked reference to that song has succumbed to linkrot, which I suppose after nineteen years is more or less to be expected. I don't know whether the links I'll offer here will last very long either, but there's a wonderful reworking by Opera Australia on YouTube, and an even more topical (for today) version from the English National Opera on YouTube. Family Guy has a version as well. I thought that perhaps the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company YouTube version would use the "original" text, but it also does some updating.
I'm sure that it's possible to find that original text, but more than a few minutes of searching only brought up more and more revisions. A page from the website of the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company tells us:
There is no song in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan that enjoys as rich a tradition having its lyrics revised as does Ko-Ko’s “I’ve Got a Little List” song. Performers began to sing revised lyrics to the song even in Gilbert’s day.
and it has some versions as well. So I guess that revising is the best way to be faithful to the original.
