Perhaps I should have seen this as an omen. On our first morning in the city I had my camera in its case, strung over my shoulder (and my cellphone in my pocket). I definitely thought that I'd be taking photographs, and rather early on that first walk I took the camera out of its case, turned it on, and focused. Something, however, was wrong. The camera didn't go on. It took me almost a minute of checking things until I opened the battery case and discovered that I'd left the battery in its charger - in our hotel room. If I was going to be taking pictures on that first day, it wasn't going to be from that camera. And from not succeeding in getting into the habit of taking pictures, it was easy to remain out of it.
