Creating a space.
There's a close relationship here to the kabbalistic concept of Tzimtzum - of
the need for God to contract himself in order to make room for evil in the world.
If God is all encompassing (and of course all good), then evil can't exist. Only
by creating a space where he doesn't reign can he create the possibility
of evil.
Of course I'm dealing here with the possibility of being surprised, of maintaining
an element of the unexpected, the unpredictable in the world, not with good and
evil. But it seems to me that the basic concept is very much the same. Though
there's certainly something enticing in viewing the web as an entirety that encompasses
everything, when we do this, we exclude the possibility of encountering something
that's not part of that entirety.
