Nobody actually connects anymore.
Though I'm not familiar with statistics on this, it's fair to assume that most
children will identify the computer as the tool with which they explore the internet
- if, that is, they realize that the internet isn't something that's already sitting
on their computer. For many of us who roamed the internet before broadband connections
there was still a passage. We had to click on "Connect" and then hear
those magical clicks and whistles that let us know that a connection was actually
being established. Because there was a barrier, we were perhaps capable of sensing
that the computer and the internet were two distinct entities, rather than a no-longer-distinguishable
intermingling. Today, when turning on the computer also means "turning on"
the internet, transferring the "personal" of the PC onto the internet
almost makes real sense.
