Everyone probably has his or her own memory of a particular book that dealt with the decline of the public sphere. Richard Sennett's The Fall of Public Man, first published in 1974, and Christopher Lasch's The Culture of Narcissism, first published in 1979, come to mind for me. And of course it goes without saying that back then only a very limited few had even heard of the internet.
