It has a nice ring to it but ...

A number of times in the past I've toyed with the idea of writing a column filled with links that bring the reader only to previous columns, or to particular pages in those columns. I like the idea, and now and then reconsider it, but at present I'm not sure just why I'd do it. After all, there is a main Boidem page (yeah, a totally uncalled for link, but hard to resist) that, pretty much by definition links to the main pages of all of the columns. Were I to write (perhaps construct would be a better word here) such a column, it would have to do something a bit different than simply list all the topics I've attempted to examine. A column of that sort would have to surprise the reader, playing (now that's in keeping with the tenor of this column) with (or against) his or her expectations. It might, for instance, attempt to tell a story that would exist at face value on the level of the main page, but that via the links would present a contradictory picture. The problem is that the more I try to define to myself what I'd like such a column to do (or how I'd like it to do that) I realize that it's a very formidable task that I'm not sure I'm up to.
