And who really cares?
Somewhat to my surprise, that phrase has only been used once before in the
Boidem - I would have expected that I'd have found numerous opportunities to use
it (and given in to the urge at least on a few of those). Back
then, it was part of an examination of what I then referred to as the uses
of links as a representation, perhaps an extension, of self in other web sites.
I'm not sure I'd call it that today, though I'm still quite sure that a great
deal about us can be learned from an examination of what we link to, and from
what we link. A Google search on the term brings up more than 500 hits, though
it seems that most of these are concerned with either the technicalities of creating
links, or the economics of gettng good placement on a page of search results,
and close to none deal with the character of, or behind, those links. And I suppose
that that sort of proves a point.
