And it's so fast!
Though it's a medium that I've devoted the better part of my last decade to exploring
(and I wouldn't be doing that if it didn't attract me), there's always a lingering
feeling that perhaps in its essence the World Wide Web is anathema to my worldview.
I'm certainly in favor of the democratizing aspects of the possibility of making
every reader a writer, every passive participant more active. I've got no argument
with that. But our ability to bring a half-baked idea into the world so quickly
and without hardly any effort perhaps smacks of a sort of instant gratification
that I find, if not distasteful, then at least undesirable. Though I'm sure that
I can almost daily prove that it isn't so, there's no breaking totally free from
the suspicion that the internet offers us the cognitive equivalent of fast
food.
