Getting (a bit of) work done.
Taking care of an ailing parent (or any other family member) can be an emotionally
taxing task. It's also time consuming, and infringes on other important tasks
- like earning a livelihood. During Mom's illness Mark was almost always beside
her when she was awake. And understandably this also meant that he didn't get
to work as much as he should have. In this respect as well, the computer, a broadband
connection, and an understanding workplace, were particularly helpful.
With Virtual Network Computing software installed on his home machine, Mark was
able to access his work files and almost be at the office - either in the morning
before going to the hospital, or in the evening after coming home. It wasn't necessarily
the same as actually being there, but it definitely
made getting some work done possible.
