Scattered, but accessible.
I've confessed (numerous times I'm sure) that although I try to teach people to
file things logically as they write, I rarely practice what I preach. My practice
is basically "write now, file (if ever) later". Which is why I was elated
when Copernic released its desktop search tool, which I then promptly replaced
with Google's similar tool (which isn't necessarily faster, but has for me a better
interface, and seems to take up much fewer computer resources).
I'd still like a tool for marginalia, but for my own notes, desktop search gives
me what might be called a two-pronged approach to finding notes. After all, as
long as I can successfully remember a significant word in a note I'm trying to
find (or if, planning ahead, I type into each note the name of the article or
page it relates to) a simple search on the contents of my hard drive will retrieve
it.
